Before children can learn to read, they need to develop certain visual skills.

This book helps your child further develop the visual skills necessary to learn to read and write.

Excel English Early Skills: Beginning Consonant Sounds aims to teach children the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, which is an important first step in putting sounds together to form words.

Once your child is familiar with the beginning sounds of words, they can then move on to the ending sounds.

In Excel English Early Skills: Vowel Sounds your child will explore the relationship between vowels and their sounds.

In English Books 3, 4 and 5 in this series, children learn about the beginning sounds, ending sounds and vowel sounds of words in detail. Excel English Early Skills: Beginning, Ending and Vowel Sounds consolidates and revises your child’s knowledge in these areas.

Excel English Early Skills: Learning the Alphabet teaches your child to recognise all the letters in the alphabet, and breaks learning it down into three sections.

Once your child has learned all the letters of the alphabet and matched them to their sounds, they can start putting these sounds together into words.

Once your child is familiar with letters of the alphabet and matched them to their sounds, they can start putting sounds together into words. Book 8 started your child reading and writing whole words, and Book 9 continues with further activities.

Once your child has had some practice in putting together sounds to make meaningful words, and has practised writing whole words (see Books 8 and 9 of this series), they can begin reading and understanding simple sentences.
